Día Once: Return to Zurite!

 ¡Hola Familias! It's Ellie and Murohn again, we know you missed us :).

Today was a very special day... we got to meet the president of Zurite! 

    But let's start from the beginning. In the morning, we woke up (some earlier than others) to a delicious hotel breakfast. Once we finished the meal, we got back on the buses and said goodbye to Cusco (for now). After a bus ride full of music and singing, we were back in Zurite at Doña Gladys'! 

    This is when the big moment happened. THE president of Zurite visited us for an hour! He was scheduled for 11am but came at 11:30 (he's a busy man), giving us some time to sunbathe and start preparing for our final Artistic Presentation to the school (more about that later). President Herbert (not Hoover) told us about political and environmental issues that are important to him and the community. What's really cool about President Herbert is the legacy he plans on leaving behind, as he intends to create a long-term plan to strengthen the community that future presidents can follow (so actual progress happens). Once he left, we continued with a discussion about ways to get involved with issues you care about. The strong ideals and sense of community in Peru have taught us all something we can bring back home.

    After such a long discussion in the hot sun, we were all eager for some lunch. Doña Gladys prepared a delicious soup and rice with chicken, fries, and vegetables that we would all rate a 10/10!

    Once we finished lunch, it was time to get back to work. We headed to the school and split into two groups to work on the mural and the greenhouse. We made a lot of progress on both projects, and at around 4:30, we went down to the basketball court.

    This is where the fun starts :). Murohn and Nilesh choreographed about a minute into 24K Magic in preparation for our final Artistic Presentation. Basically, on Monday, all the kids in the school will perform song and dance for us, and Menlo always prepares a little something as well. We decided to sing Hotel California and also dance to 24K Magic. Everyone had a lot of fun and we are so excited to present it to the students once it's ready! (There's a little sneak peak below...)

Day Three: We Made It!!

We made it to Zurite! After a long day of travel (more than a day) and a couple of power naps, the group made it from Miami to Lima with just enough time to gather all our bags (including 5 giant ones full of soccer equipment we're gifting to the community here) and recheck them for our second red-eye in two days. Although we arrived quite late into Cusco, we spent the night at a super cute hotel: a well-deserved treat after sleeping in chairs for more than 24 hours! The next day, the group headed around Cusco to explore the ancient Incan temple known as Qorikancha and its history with our superb tour guide, David. We were also introduced to coca leaves and interesting cinnamon-derived remedies for the altitude. Day One: Onboarding and Tonesetting

Hi, Parents! Today we met as a group in the library classroom to break the ice and get to know each other better. Safe to say everyone is filled with excitement and nervousness, but overall, we are very ready to go! In our meeting, we reviewed group norms for the trip, did some "speed dating" to get to know each other, and discussed some of our fears. To end it off, we went over the packing list to make sure everyone had what they needed. Now we are off to go home to finalize our preparations, say our last goodbyes, and get ready to go! Day Two? Bienvenidos a Miami…

Greetings from Miami! After a less than restful red-eye here, many in the group gathered on the oh-so-comfortable airport floor for a group nap. Waking from our slumber, some sought sustenance, while others decide to bust out the hackey sack, and still others are drowsily passing our last couple hours before boarding our plane to Lima. One nice benefit to passing through Miami on our way: we’re already hearing more Spanish being spoken here than English! We may not have time for another post during our layover in Lima because we’ll have to collect our bags, recheck them with a new airline, pass through security again, and find some food - but we’ll do our best to check in within a day of arriving in Cusco (though likely not right when we arrive at 1am!).  Till next time!
