Day Eight: Regresa a Clases
¡Hola familias!
Today was more than just another eventful day of work, as today we got to meet the high school students of Zurite. Unlike the previous morning routine of a 6:30 wakeup and a 7:00 breakfast, today we ate at 6:30 in order to make it to the opening assembly at Zurite High School.
The opening ceremony set the tone for the day as Christopher gave a speech in Spanish on teamwork between the students of Menlo School and Zurite High School, a theme that would carry on throughout the day. Today was the first day that we had the helping hands of Zurite students for the projects at the school, those being the mural and greenhouse.
After the assembly we were split into the previous day's groups. While one group worked to finish painting the mural wall, the other worked alongside students to lift wood beams and weed the area surrounding the greenhouse.
Like usual, both groups met at Doña Gladys' house for a delicious lunch of soup and chicken with rice.
After lunch concluded, the roles of the group switched. Throughout the morning and afternoon, there was intermingling with the Menlo high schoolers and the Zurite high schoolers. The groups worked hand-in-hand with the Zurite high schoolers to start sketching the mural and build a ditch alongside the structure of the greenhouse for the plastic covering to go into.
When we finished our work, we played a local street game called Kiwi. Kiwi is a hybrid of bowling, cup-stacking, and dodgeball. Playing with the local kids, everyone had a blast and enjoyed time off from work.
Buenas noches,
Kurt y Alex
